Nash Community College President Bill Carver, during a recent ceremony, awarded Darlene Silver of Hollister the 2013 NCC Pride Award. Each year, the Pride Award honors a full-time employee or group of employees who approach their role with pride. Silver was selected as the recipient for the Pride Award for demonstrating a high level of service and commitment in her position as Administrative Assistant for the Offices of the Executive Vice President and Chief Finance Officer and Vice President for Instruction and Chief Academic Officer.
For 21 years, she has offered administrative support to Nash Community College Vice Presidents for Instruction. Silver’s organizational skills and expertise, keen attention to detail and positive attitude have supported continual growth of the College through instruction and programs.
In 2002, she was selected by her peers as the Staff Award recipient for her outstanding work ethic. Silver received the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) award in 2009.
Nash Community College has awarded the 2013 Ambassador Award to Kelley Deal of Rocky Mount, Senior Director of Marketing and Communication. Each year, the award is given to a full-time employee or group of employees who provide outstanding representation of the College in the community.
Since joining the staff in 2006, Kelley Deal has advanced the College’s marketing efforts with the implementation of social media marketing, the “I chose Nash” campaign and the $9.5 million bond referendum campaign in support of the new Continuing Education and Public Services Building. Her efforts have led the College to increased community awareness through her weekly enewsletter, Sunday column and involvement in the local community.

Nash Community College, as a member of the Mission Critical Operations consortium led by Cleveland Community College, is the recipient of a $2,548,106 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Employment Training Administration. Over $23 million was awarded this week to the consortium of college and university partners for the development of a Mission Critical Operations program.
“Through the grant, Nash Community College will enhance the Electric Line Construction, Electrical Systems, Electronics Engineering, Emergency Management, Healthcare Business Informatics, Networking Technology, and Computer Information Technology programs,” Nash Community College President Bill Carver said. “The program will create career pathways in these areas to meet demand for a mission critical workforce able to anticipate, prevent, mitigate, and respond to crisis and events in the day-to-day critical operations of industries and municipalities.”
The program is aimed at combating the evolving threat of critical infrastructure operations failure and encompasses cyber and physical security, facility management, communications, industrial systems, and any system deemed critical to operations and public safety by an employer. In addition to Nash and Cleveland Community Colleges, consortium members are Wake Technical Community College, Moultrie Technical Community College (GA), and UNC-Charlotte.
According to a U.S. Department of Labor press release, $474.5 million in grants to community colleges and universities was announced by Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez Wednesday. The grants will be used to assist colleges and universities throughout the country with development and growth in innovative training in partnership with local employers. The Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant program provided the grants. The program is multi-year, approximately $2 billion initiative to expand training programs for unemployed workers, especially those impacted by foreign trade.
“I remember walking onto the campus of NCC for the first time and I was so happy because I realized that I had finally made it to college. My first semester was so much fun. All the instructors were really nice and helpful. I could not believe how much they cared about their students. I was treated as a person, not just a number or a seat,” 2002 NCC Associate in Applied Science in Business Administration graduate Allison Moss said.

“After my first semester, life intervened and due to finances I was not going to be able to remain at NCC. This broke my heart. I was put in touch with the NCC Foundation. I expressed that I was not going to be able to attend future semesters due to finances. The NCC Foundation worked hard and believed in me. They helped me get a scholarship that allowed me to stay in school.”

The gift, from watch battery donations received in August, will help deserving students in pursuing their educational goals. Nash Community College faculty, staff and students gathered on Wednesday to remember the events of September 11, 2001. Northern Nash High School’s ROTC presented the colors and NCC Direct Loan Officer Heather Perry sang the National Anthem. Nash County Emergency Services Assistant Director and Risk Manager Scott Rogers shared remarks during the ceremony held by the Business and Industry Center flag pole.“From the moment I was invited to speak, and as I began to gather my thoughts until this moment that I stand here now, there has been one topic that was obvious to me that I speak on and that is commitment,” he said. “Twelve years ago today many good people displayed their commitment to good. They displayed commitment to service, commitment to self, and commitment to others.”From first responders to business professionals, security guards, doctors, nurses and passersby, Rogers explained the high level of sacrifice and commitment shown on September 11, 2001. “For you see commitment is defined as the state of being bound emotionally or intellectually to a course of action or to another person or persons; the pledge to do.”“What better way can we remember and honor those that lost their lives this day 12 years ago to senseless tragedy? I say we can commit, commit to prevention, and commit to be alert, to being aware. After the events of 9/11 the NYPD coined the phrase “see something- say something. The young men and women who graduate from this college and many others trained in law enforcement cannot bear all the burden for the prevention of evil, we must all be committed.”Nash Community College trains first responders providing necessary preparation of area law enforcement agencies, fire departments and emergency medical personnel, training that continues to evolve with an expanding and aging population. Brian Sykes of Nash County Emergency Management Services is glad he chose Nash. “I worked many years in the electrical industry; however, I knew electrical work was not my passion. Later in life I decided it was time for a change, and went back to school to obtain my EMT and EMT Intermediate. Nash Community College helped me realize my dreams,” Sykes said.
