NCC Grads Celebrate Expansion with Beam Signing

Following the recent graduation ceremonies, Nash Community College graduates, trustees, faculty, staff and students participated in a “beam signing” in the College’s Fenner Memorial Clock Courtyard. The beam will be used in the construction of the College’s new Continuing Education and Public Services Building. The new building is expected to open next year.

Alumni Association Spotlight: Jordan-Justice Stallings

I came to Nash Community College right after graduating from home school. While I was well prepared for academic life, being one of several thousand students was a system shock. However, Nash was the best choice I could have made for beginning college life. Nash offered me many opportunities to excel in my studies and leadership.  Within my first month as a student I was elected as Drama Club Vice President. While serving in this leadership role and taking a full class load I was able to finish my first semester of college with a 4.0 GPA and was named to the Dean’s List.

During my second and third semesters I found even more leadership doors being opened. I was able to join both of Nash’s honor societies, Gamma Beta Phi and Phi Theta Kappa. If someone were to ask me what was the best part of my experience at NCC, hands down, it was my time serving as Student Government Association President and Vice President. The times I spent working with Dr. Carver, Administration and the Board of Trustees were priceless training in real world leadership skills.

I also spent a lot of time traveling throughout North Carolina representing NCC as the student body president. Wherever I went I spoke about the great school that I am so now so proudly able to say I am an alumna of.

Whenever I hit a bump in the road with my academics or personal issues I had the best support system available. My teachers went above the standard to help me excel as a student. If I ever just needed an ear to listen all I had to do was knock on one of several office doors around campus. My SGA advisor was one of the biggest reasons I kept my head held high. When things became stressful for me I knew she always had my back.  Having people like that in my corner kept me going; kept me pushing to be the best I can. If it weren’t for the people at NCC cheering me on there would have been times I would have wanted to just give up. What Nash Community College has to offer is more than classes; it’s heart. The people who work there are the reason students succeed.  There is no doubt in my mind that Nash has the best faculty and staff in the world.

While at first being one of so many students was an adjustment I quickly came to value that at Nash I was not a number; I was Jordan-Justice. To have hundreds of students, as well as faculty and staff know not only my face but my name helped me to build many great friendships and professional connections. I know these relationships will be with me the rest of my life and that I will always have a “home” at NCC. The things I learned during my time at NCC go far beyond things studied in books. I learned that who I am is a leader, a life long learner, a problem solver and a valuable member of my community. I will always take these lessons with me.

I am proud to say that I am now a Class of 2014 graduate and there has never been a moment since the day I enrolled that I haven’t been glad “I chose Nash”!

College Presidents Discuss Advanced Manufacturing Alliance

The Community College Presidents of the North Carolina Advanced Manufacturing Alliance met at Nash Community College on Wednesday, May 21 to discuss strategy for sustaining and scaling up the alliance. The North Carolina Advanced Manufacturing Alliance comprises 10 community colleges providing specialized training to students to prepare them for careers in advanced manufacturing. An $18 million grant from the United States Department of Labor provides the consortium with funding for equipment used by advanced manufacturing companies throughout the State. The Alliance offers accelerated training to people who are unemployed and dislocated as a result of offshoring and provides them the skills and credentials employers are seeking for well-paid jobs. The program uses curricula for its state-of-the-art equipment and students are equipped with iPads for online connectivity to their coursework and their success managers. Additionally, it is accredited by The National Center for Construction Education and Research, the national industry organization, to provide instructor accreditation and training in North Carolina.

NCC Celebrates Graduation

Over the past few weeks, the Nash Community College campus has celebrated major milestones in its commitment to student success and graduating every student.

The College’s Adult High School Diploma and High School Equivalency commencement ceremony was held Thursday, May 15, 2014 in the College’s Brown Auditorium. Three students graduated with Adult High School diplomas and 126 students graduated with High School Equivalency diplomas. Dr. Cindy Bennett, Executive Director of Strategic Twin Counties Educational Partnership (STEP), delivered the keynote address.

Students, faculty and staff celebrated a record Curriculum graduation Friday, May 16 with 458 students receiving 626 degrees, diplomas and certificates. Two hundred sixty students walked across the stage during the largest graduation ceremony in the history of the College. Nash Community College is ranked number four of only 12 community colleges in North Carolina currently experiencing growth. Over 120 guests were seated in the Library and Rotunda in Building A watching the live feed.

North Carolina Treasurer Janet Cowell encouraged the graduates in their future endeavors saying spirituality, self-awareness and relationships are keys to finding an individual’s way in life. Student Government Association President James Horne addressed the graduates. “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something because every single one of us can do anything we want,” he said. “We can be anybody we want to be. We are the class of 2014 and we will succeed, we will fly. I see people in this place with a passion, a desire and a will to do great things and make changes in the world,” Horne said.

Following the Curriculum graduation, the College presented its largest class of Associate Degree Nursing graduates during the Nurses Pinning ceremony. Fifty-eight Associate Degree Nursing students graduated – nearly double the size of the College’s next largest nursing class. Robyn Perkerson, NCC Alumna and Chief Executive Officer of LifeCare Hospitals of North Carolina, shared an inspiring message. The Instructional Innovation Award was established by the NCC Foundation to annually recognize and promote faculty and staff driven activities that positively impact classroom instruction. The focus of the award is to encourage ideas and projects that demonstrate innovation and enhance students’ learning experiences. Faculty and staff members apply for the award by outlining the benefits of the project they are pursuing. The applications are reviewed by a committee of peers and the best innovation program is selected to receive the award. The program selected receives $1,000 as start-up funding or continued program enhancement.

Azaleas Gifted to Nash Community College

NC Beautiful, WRAL-TV5 and Capitol Broadcasting have selected Nash Community College (NCC) to receive 50 azaleas for use in its beautification project at the Myrtle Carter Henry Amphitheater. The award is part of NC Beautiful’s 28th Annual Azalea Celebration, which selects North Carolina community groups for improving their communities through creative landscape projects.

The new azalea garden was planted beside the seating area of the College’s Myrtle Carter Henry Amphitheater. Nash Community College’s new LiveWell and Learn Trail, a 2.5 mile fitness and nature trail winding through the wooded area of campus, will bisect the garden, giving visitors a chance to explore and enjoy the garden.

The College’s Master Gardener Ken White and the Campus Tree Advisory Committee coordinated the planting and student and employee volunteers from the NCC Science Department, Math & Science Club, Student Government Association, and other student organizations assisted. General upkeep and maintenance tasks will also be performed by curriculum students through the Science Department Student Learning Project and by community members taking Continuing Education personal enrichment classes related to horticulture.

Nash Community College has concentrated its efforts on beautifying the campus for the benefit of the students and the community for the past eight years. NCC’s current beautification project, of which the Azalea Garden will be part, is the LiveWell and Learn Trail. Opening to the public in the fall, the trail will wind through the wooded back area of campus. Loops and spurs are currently being added to increase the length of the trail and take visitors to learning and fitness stations and the outdoor amphitheater. The Amphitheater area will include the pond, woodland shelter, and Azalea Garden.

Thirty learning stations along the LiveWell and Learn Trail will feature Quick Response (QR) Codes etched into metal plates mounted on poles. Visitors will scan the codes with a smartphone or tablet to launch an informational webpage about a relevant subject such as botany, local history, conservation, ornithology, or fitness. The College envisions that the LiveWell and Learn Trail will become a favorite destination for families and individuals to enjoy nature, stay fit, and learn about the area they call home.

The LiveWell and Learn Trail and the Myrtle Carter Henry Amphitheater area have been created by the College for the community and area travelers to enjoy. The Amphitheater was built in 2003 and enhanced in 2014 with support from the DeLeon Carter Foundation. A concrete seating platform and bridge were built in early 2013 through two Eagle Scout projects.
