On Thursday, January 29, 2014 the Nash Community College Student Government Association and Alumni Association joined together for a “Day of Service” at the Frederick E. Turnage Chapter of the American Red Cross. While there, the students and staff cleaned the Disaster Assistance Vehicle and made comfort kits for individuals who find themselves in desperate situations.

Comfort kits are composed of various items which provide comfort during disastrous situations such as home fires and weather related issues. The comfort kits were organized specifically for children consisting of shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, lotion, a comb, and a stuffed Mickey Mouse toy. These kits are designed to maintain good hygiene practices and comfort in the midst of a disaster.

Students cleaned, organized and equipped the Disaster Assistance Vehicle with supplies, preparing it to respond to the next disaster. The Red Cross has a variety of volunteer opportunities for everyone including clerical work, support staff, speakers, drivers, blood drives, and a variety of other ways.
