NCC Offers Tutoring for Life

After completing his Associate in Arts degree as a college transfer student at Nash Community College the summer of 2014, Grant Sherrod enrolled at East Carolina University in the fall. He plans to complete Bachelors of Science degrees in Business Administration and Accounting and then attend graduate school.

On October 24, 2014, Sherrod Tweeted: “Going back to @NashCC today to get some help from the best math teacher ever! …Pitt Im coming home! #bluelove”. The “Pitt” he refers to is Mrs. Dina Pitt, Mathematics Department Chair. And you may have heard before of “blue love” – Nash Community College’s commitment to student success: a commitment that does not end at graduation.

“The faculty at Nash was willing to provide assistance when it was needed; however, no one comes close to my math professor, Mrs. Dina Pitt. She is an extraordinary person who cares about every one of her students and their future. Mrs. Pitt was in tune to her students and ready to assist with any issues that were hindering success. She always had that saying, ‘We appreciate you at Nash Community College.’ I genuinely felt appreciated,” he recalls. Those sentiments will still ring true for Sherrod long after he graduated from Nash.

Alumni Grant Sherrod’s Tweet sparked conversations among college administrators about the need to provide ongoing academic support for students after they graduate. As a result, the Tutoring for Life program was recently created at Nash Community College. This includes flexible academic support for current students and alumni like Sherrod who find they need a little help even at the university level. In the program offered through Google Talk, Nash Community College instructors, most likely with whom the student or graduate has already had a working relationship, provide online tutoring that is quick, accessible, and convenient.

Tutoring for Life was launched in February for current students and alumni. In addition to the online tutoring, Nash Community College makes peer tutoring available to current students through its Peer Assisted Learning Tutor Connection Program, or PAL Program. PAL is an appointment-based tutoring initiative that connects students who need extra support with peer tutors who have demonstrated proficiency in select courses.

Additionally, students can get help with math studies in the College’s Math Tank which is open daily in the Science & Technology Building, room 7106. The Tank is equipped with a wide array of technology for effective learning. Math Instructors are there to answer any questions students have regarding classwork and homework. For assistance in English, students are frequenting the English Studio located on the second floor of Building D in Room 4215. Writing assistance is provided there Monday through Friday.

“I have made many careless decisions in my life; however, choosing Nash wasn’t one of them,” Sherrod said. “Nash Community College students are provided with instruction which promotes success in the classroom. When I talked to friends who went to other schools about how things were going and what classes they were taking, they all seemed to have the same response – they felt lost. That is a problem I never endured at Nash Community College. One of the hardest classes I took was college level general chemistry; however, with assistance from my instructor I found success.”

Through my experience Nash provided the opportunity to learn, meet new people, and learn lessons to enable me to be successful. I’m proud to say, I Chose Nash!”
