Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society Inducts Students

Group PhotoNash Community College’s Gamma Beta Phi Chapter recently inducted its new members. Gamma Beta Phi is a non-profit, co-educational, honor and service organization for students in colleges and universities. Its objectives are to recognize and encourage excellence in education, to promote the development of leadership ability and character, and to foster, disseminate, and improve education through appropriate service projects. To be eligible for Gamma Beta Phi, students must hold a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average and must have earned 12 or more semester hours in a major at Nash Community College.

Keynote speaker, Pat Daniels, NCC Foundation Executive Director, shared a story with the inductees as an example of three of the eight Gamma Beta Phi Code of Ethics Principles which we should all strive to live by each day: service; responsibility and charitableness. In her remarks, she remembered Alford L. Sweatt, Jr. who established a scholarship endowment at Nash Community College. Mr. Sweatt grew up during the Great Depression as one of 10 children. After graduating as the high school valedictorian, he began a successful career in business moving to Rocky Mount in 1953 where he became actively involved in the community. Upon his retirement he continued to share his time and resources in civic clubs, traveling abroad and enjoyed taking computer classes at Nash Community College as a senior citizen. He believed in lifelong learning. “Mr. Sweatt chose Nash Community College because he valued our students, service to the community, and most importantly the gift of an education though he had never earned a college degree. His legacy is remembered today through the naming of the Alford L. Sweatt, Jr. Science and Technology Center.”

Nationally, Gamma Beta Phi has approximately 40,000 active student members in its comprised chapters. Each year, the NCC Gamma Beta Phi chapter sponsors an adopt-a-grandparent program for the residents of Trinity Retirement Villas in Nashville, where members visit several times throughout the year. At the holidays, the group provides gifts for each resident fulfilling their wish lists as much as possible. NCC’s Gamma Beta Phi members have worked with Trinity Villas for more than 15 years. Residents look forward to seeing the students during each visit, and the students enjoy helping others through this and other service projects.Congratulations to the following Fall 2015 Gamma Beta Phi Inductees!
