City of Rocky Mount Special Response Team trains at Nash Community College

Police Officers serving on the City of Rocky Mount’s Special Response Team held firearms training this week in the Nash Community College indoor shooting range. Outfitted in full tactical gear, nine members fired timed qualifying rounds on shotguns, automatic rifles and pistols during the eight-hour training.

The veteran officers, some of whom are Nash Community College Basic Law Enforcement Training graduates, described the NCC facility as convenient due to the technology used in the range, and because NCC training is no longer dependent on outdoor conditions. The gun range also serves as an ideal location for simulated night training any time of the day.

NCC’s Department Chair for Public and Safety Services, Nathan Mizell said the in-service training prepares officers for response to an active shooter, hostage situation or a variety of other real-world operations in which the Special Response Team might be deployed. Mizell also serves as captain of the Nash Community College Police Department, a force of seven full-time sworn law enforcement officers, and NCC Criminal Justice School Director.

NCC’s firing range features state of the art communication technology including noise reduction headsets with integrated radio systems and lapel microphones. The devices allow for two-way communication between the instructor and students during training. According to Mizell, the technology not only aids law enforcement officers when training, but results in clearer communication and a safer environment for all classes taught in the facility, including concealed carry, gun handling and other classes.

Because of the regional reputation of the program, and due to its quality and growth along with the College’s superior in-service law enforcement training, Nash Community College recently expanded the BLET training options with the opening of the Center for Advanced Law Enforcement Training in the new Continuing Education and Public Services Building.
