Nash Community College, as part of its ongoing focus on student success and commitment to graduating every student, seeks to remove barriers to academic achievement while saving students time and money. To do this, the College is implementing a new academic advising and success center this semester.

Many new college students do not know what path to take in order to achieve their goals. Confusion can set in, and when accompanied by lack of information or misinformation, the result can make a difference in whether or not an individual achieves their goals. Having worked with college students in their first year, Amanda Guy understands the need for the advising center. Guy served as Nash Community College’s Lead Instructor for the Academic Success and Study Skills (ACA) classes, a required course where new students learn how to establish study skills, connect with campus resources and manage their time effectively. She was recently promoted to head the advising center as Director of Advising & First Year Experience.

Located in the “Underground” (Building D, room 4005), even the center’s location is indicative of Nash Community College’s commitment to serving the whole student. The center is located just next door to the ACA classrooms as well as the Hawk’s Nest which opened last semester as an area where students can  establish lifelong relationships by connecting with others, get involved in the Student Government Association and engage in campus life. The goal of the ACA course, Hawk’s Nest, advising center and the entire campus is the same: student success.

“Students need to know that continual, proactive, strategic planning and preparation is essential now, in order for them to be successful in the future,” Guy said. “Through a center dedicated to academic advising, we are better positioned to help students stay laser-focused on their academic and career aspirations. The College has created pathways to assist students as they transition from high school into college and then to their respective careers. We want each student to know their dreams can become a reality. But that requires a little guidance along the way.” Guy holds a Master’s Degree in Executive Leadership from Gardner-Webb University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from East Carolina University.

Students will utilize the advising and success center in preparation of registration and throughout each semester to ensure they enroll in the classes they need to take, and that they are aware of campus resources. The center will be open for students to make an appointment or stop by for assistance with their schedules, to learn how to engage with campus resources such as tutoring, computer labs, supplemental instruction and more.
