NCC Moves Forward with Construction Projects

Nash Community College is moving forward with construction projects thanks to funding from the $2 billion Connect NC bond which North Carolina voters supported during the March 2016 primary election. “Site work and grading have begun for the two new buildings and construction is estimated to begin in June 2017,” Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer Adrienne Covington said. “Schematic and design development drawings are currently under review. We anticipate the project being completed in Spring 2018.”

New construction at the college consists of two one-story instructional facilities. An Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Facility totaling approximately 16,000 square feet will be constructed to house academic and training space for students enrolled in Computer-Integrated Machining, Electrical Systems Technology, Industrial Systems Technology, Welding Technology, and Electronics Engineering Technology programs. The second building totaling approximately 10,000 square feet will house the Cosmetology program including instructional salon lab areas, academic classrooms, lab instructional areas for manicure and pedicure and general program support spaces.

The Connect NC Bond supported statewide efforts to strategically improve public infrastructure including higher education, state parks, agriculture, safety, and water and sewer projects in 76 North Carolina counties. Nash Community College received $7.7 million from the bond for physical expansion and improvements.

Upon completion of the new Engineering and Cosmetology facilities, Building C will be repurposed to accommodate the Early College High School program. Currently the Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools Early College High School is located in mobile units on the west side of Nash Community College’s campus. Repurposing Building C for the Early College program allows expansion of the program into more suitable facilities for instruction and to accommodate anticipated growth of the program. Early College students take a combination of high school and college courses graduating with both a high school diploma and either an Associate’s Degree or two years of college credit transferable to a four-year institution.

The location of the new facilities is planned to expand the recently established south end of campus, directly across from the newly constructed Continuing Education and Public Safety Building. The site location and the existing parking lot was designed with future buildings in mind. Estimated construction costs are just over $4.0 million.

Nash Community College is entering its fiftieth year of serving the community by meeting the diverse educational needs of individuals and organizations.
