Little Free Library Promotes Reading in Rocky Mount

DSC_0045Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. The small, front-yard book exchanges exist in approximately 36,000 locations in 70 countries—from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan. Now, Nash Community College has joined the movement to share books, bring people together and grow communities of readers with an on-site Little Free Library.

Located in front of the Betsy B. Currin Child Development Center, the free standing free library is open for community members to enjoy. The ‘take a book, leave a book’ model creates a dynamic collection with choices for everyone extending the scope and reach of the college’s Library. Additional donations of new and gently used books can be dropped off inside the Nash Community College Library.

“With the location of the new Little Free Library in front of the Child Development Center, local children, families and Early Childhood Education students are taking the opportunity to read and trade books. This is a fun way to engage our community in reading,” Angela Nieves, director of the center and co-director of the NCC Early Childhood Education program shared.

The Little Free Library nonprofit organization has been honored by the Library of Congress, the National Book Foundation, and the American Library Association. Each year, nearly 10 million books are shared in Little Free Libraries. Please visit littlefreelibrary.org to learn more.
