Summer Bridge Program Scheduled for July at NCC

High School seniors should plan now to get a head start on college this summer. Nash Community College has announced its 2017 Summer Bridge Program will be held July 10 - 28. "The 2016 Summer Bridge Program really helped me succeed with my first year of college because the teachers involved helped me not only make friends, but also provided the tools and information necessary for me to have an early understanding and preparation for college and the adult world," 2016 Summer Bridge Participant Xavier Johnson-Graham said. He is now completing his first year at NCC. "Recent high school graduates will get a taste of college life during the Summer Bridge program. Students enjoy seeing what Nash Community College has to offer, and parents like that they can save time and money as their students prepare for life beyond high school," Renee Martinez, Summer Bridge Program Coordinator, and Humanities instructor said.

The NCC Summer Bridge Program gives incoming freshman the opportunity to make a successful transition to college. Classes are held from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Mondays-Thursdays and 9:00 am -12:45 pm on Fridays during the program, allowing students to earn four semester hours of college credit ACA 122 College Transfer Success and PED 110 Fit & Well for Life as well as participate in English and Math seminars.

“The three-week program helps recent high school graduates adjust to college as they get to know the campus, receive instruction and build relationships with their peers, instructors, and staff. Following the bridge program last year, participants demonstrated improvement on placement test scores and an overall increase in comfort level of being on campus as they prepare to enter college in the fall,” Martinez said.

The ACA 122 course prepares participants for college courses by teaching time management, note-taking, and test-taking strategies as well the other necessary skills needed to be successful in college. The English seminar provides a refresher of the grammar and writing skills to make students ready for college level writing; and the math seminar helps students improve math skills needed in order to be successful in college math courses.

Students are required to take the college’s placement tests before the start date and will take a post test on the last day of the program. Each day participants will begin with a guest speaker who will discuss various campus resources and core courses at NCC. Bridge participants will have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular programs offered on campus, including wellness activities and more.

Registration runs from April 8th until June 9th and the cost is $80 per student. Visit www.nashcc.edu/summerbridge for more information, call 252-451-8373 or email crmartinez699@nashcc.edu.
