Nash Community College has been awarded a $60,000 grant from the Burroughs\u00a0Wellcome\u00a0Fund (BWF). BWF Student STEM Enrichment Program funds support career-oriented and practical programs intended\u00a0to\u00a0provide creative science enrichment activities for students in K-12 education.<\/p>\n
The Student STEM Enrichment Program (SSEP) supports diverse programs\u00a0to\u00a0enable primary and secondary students\u00a0to\u00a0participate in creative, hands-on STEM activities and pursue inquiry-based exploration- an educational approach that BWF believes\u00a0to\u00a0be an effective way\u00a0to\u00a0increase students\u2019 understanding and appreciation of the scientific process.<\/p>\n
\u201cBurroughs\u00a0Wellcome\u00a0Foundation recognized that schools like NCC have a greatly increased reach in rural areas and with underserved communities,\u201d said NCC Biology Professor Dr. David Beamer said. “This planning grant will be used\u00a0to\u00a0develop STEM learning modules connected\u00a0to\u00a0ongoing DNA research as well as a scientific field and laboratory tasks associated with data collection and analysis. Funds will be used for program development and instructional materials.”<\/p>\n
