Nash Community College President Lew Hunnicutt has announced November 8, 2021, as National-First Generation Student Day on the campus, and is urging all students, alumni and employees to observe the importance of the day.<\/p>\n
The College\u00a0defines first-generation students as those students who are the first in their immediate family to attend an institution of higher education.\u00a0The campus\u00a0joins the national\u00a0celebration on the same day when\u00a0colleges,\u00a0universities, corporations, non-profits, and K-12 schools are encouraged to celebrate the success of first-generation college students, faculty, staff, and alumni.<\/p>\n
“We are acknowledging the contributions and diversity that first-generation students bring to our community and committing as an institution to providing resources to support these students in their post-secondary success,” President Hunnicutt said.<\/p>\n
The Council for Opportunity in Education and the Center for First-Generation\u00a0Student Success launched the inaugural First-Generation College Celebration\u00a0in 2017 and it has since been recognized\u00a0annually.<\/p>\n
Between now and November 1, NCC students, alumni and employees are encouraged to share their “Nighthawk First Gen”\u00a0stories with #NighthawkFirstGen to help the community celebrate the success of first-generation\u00a0college students.<\/p>\n
The day also brings\u00a0awareness to\u00a0the systemic barriers\u00a0to\u00a0higher education and the support\u00a0needed\u00a0for this important and resilient population.<\/p>\n
