Cadets graduated from Nash Community College’s Firefighter Training Academy on Thursday, June 23, 2022 during a ceremony held in Brown Auditorium.\u00a0Offered twice each year, the academy\u2019s mission is to\u00a0recruit and train diverse students for a prosperous career in the fire service. Upon successful completion, students hold state certifications in Firefighter I & II including Hazardous Materials Operations, Rapid Intervention Crew, Emergency Vehicle Driver. Soft skills training and interviewing best practices are also taught during training.\u00a0Following completion, students have an opportunity to increase their marketability by completing the eight-week Emergency Medical Technician Academy.<\/p>\n

During the ceremony, the following firefighters were honored with awards:\u00a0Seth Mahaffey, Academic Award; Luke Parks, Flame Award; James Williams, Bugle Award and\u00a0Captain Matthew Hux, Rocky Mount Fire Department,\u00a0Instructional Excellence Award.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNash Community College Fire Academy is a lighthouse in the fire and emergency services world,\u201d Willie Kearney, NCC Fire Services Coordinator and Instructor, said. \u201cWe have a touted reputation for producing highly trained entry-level professionals for the fire and rescue service.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tuition for the Fire Academy is $1,300 and includes books and a uniform, or for members of volunteer fire or rescue departments, approximately $600.\u00a0Scholarships may be available<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prerequisites for the Fire Academy include a high school diploma or high school equivalency and medical screening. Nash Community College’s next 19-week Firefighter Training Academy is scheduled to begin August 1, 2022. Academic Award – Seth Mahaffey<\/strong><\/p>\n

The firefighter’s<\/span>\u00a0performance determines this award as it is given\u00a0<\/span>to the student with the\u00a0<\/span>highest academic average. Mahaffey’s <\/span>grade point average was<\/span>\u00a094.7.<\/span><\/div>\n

Flame Award – Luke Parks<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Flame Award is\u00a0<\/span>awarded to the student who is the most outstanding based upon overall accomplishments. T<\/span>his award recipient is determined by a\u00a0<\/span>majority vote from all the students in the academy and is based on teamwork,\u00a0<\/span>fellowship enthusiasm and cooperation.<\/span><\/div>\n

Bugle Award – James Williams<\/strong><\/p>\n

I<\/span>n the early days of<\/span> the fire service,\u00a0<\/span>leaders gave orders to their troops with a large brass horn commonly called bugles. The<\/span>\u00a0bugle\u00a0<\/span>later became a symbol of leadership and the higher rank an individual achieves <\/span>in the fire service the more bugles they can<\/span>\u00a0attain. Th<\/span>e NCC Fire Academy\u00a0<\/span>presented<\/span> the Bugle Award <\/span>for the first time ever recognizing\u00a0<\/span>excellence. This<\/span>\u00a0is an award that most likely will not <\/span>be presented at every academy, but will be de<\/span>termined in <\/span>special circumstances. In this case, the leadership f<\/span>elt the award<\/span> was warranted to honor one cadet’s\u00a0<\/span>exceptional leadership qualities including discipline,\u00a0<\/span>delegation, <\/span>communication, <\/span>teamwork,<\/span> encouragement and\u00a0<\/span>leading by example.<\/span><\/div>\n

Instructional Excellence Award –\u00a0Captain Matthew Hux, Rocky Mount Fire Department<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Instructional Excellence Award\u00a0recipient is selected by<\/span>\u00a0the class and is awarded to the instructor that\u00a0<\/span>the class feels was the most influential throughout their training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
