With area business and industry partners in the room, the school system and college explained how they plan to better prepare recent graduates for work after high school through the new WIN Academy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<p>Approximately half of local high schoolers<span class=\"gmail_default\">\u00a0<\/span>have not decided on\u00a0<span class=\"gmail_default\">their<\/span>\u00a0college or career path,\u201d NCC President Dr. Lew Hunnicutt said. \u201cOur job is to prepare students with the custom skills needed to work in local business and industry. But we also have an obligation to teach non-technical power skills needed to be successful in their career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14964\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2426-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"742\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2426-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2426-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2426-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2426-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2426-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2426-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Work in Nash (WIN) Academy is a three-week program immediately following high school graduation to educate students on the skills required to be successful in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis concept is a win for Nash County and an answer to the worker shortage we are currently facing,\u201d Hunnicutt said.<\/p>\n<p>Graduating Nash County high school seniors who are not currently on Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or dual enrollment paths will have the opportunity to apply. Application for the academy is open to students who are not currently on a college bound or degree completion pathway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The<span style=\"caret-color: #222222; color: #222222;\"> WIN Academy is another\u00a0option we have for our students,&#8221; Nash County Public <\/span>Schools superintendent<span style=\"caret-color: #222222; color: #222222;\"> Dr. Steve Ellis said. &#8220;I look forward to continuing the great partnership with NCPS and NCC. Uniting together will build a better student\u00a0and a better\u00a0Nash County. We rely on them to tell us the skills they need graduates to have, outside of the traditional technical skills we teach,\u201d Hunnicutt said. Business and industry partners will visit the classrooms to assist with instruction and provide exposure to career opportunities in Nash County.<\/p>\n<p>Academy cadets will meet five days a week for four hours per day over the course of three weeks. Emphasis will be placed on teaching power skills such as time management, critical thinking, communication and more.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14965\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2635-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"742\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2635-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2635-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2635-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2635-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2635-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.nashccnews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_2635-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese critical skills are not often a focus of traditional technical training, but these are areas where employees sometimes do not meet workforce needs,\u201d Hunnicutt continued. \u201cAcademy graduates will be exposed to practical skills to assist them once they enter the workforce. They will be experiencing Nash County employers both in and out of the classroom to help with career decision making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of area business and industry\u2019s commitment to the academy will be guaranteed interviews for individuals who successfully complete the WIN Academy. \u201cHaving these relationships and interviewing experience will greatly enhance the graduates\u2019 chance to become employed locally in their career of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<p>Hunnicutt said he believes the students are an important renewable workforce resource for Nash County. Businesses will gain exposure to eager potential employees each year with priority access to academy participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis academy directly promotes our mission of meeting students where they are and preparing them for successful and rewarding careers. We also have an obligation to employers to help them retain a skilled workforce.
