Nash Community College students are once again making waves in the academic community.\u00a0\u00a0 At the 113th annual meeting of the North Carolina Academy Science (NCAS), held on the Methodist University\u2019s campus in Fayetteville, NC April 1-2, 2016, NCC students played pivotal roles.\u00a0 During the Collegiate Academy of the North Carolina Academy of Science (CANCAS), officer elections, Nash Community College Student Ambassador Zachary Privette was chosen to hold the position of vice president, and Clayton Lynch and Samantha Killoran were chosen as historians.<\/p>\n
Also during the event\u00a0Samantha Killoran and Zachary Privette won a 2nd Place Derieux Award in Ecology for research on the Three Line Salamander. \u00a0NCC Student Ambassador Ismael Gomez won a 3rd place Derieux Award in Molecular Genetics for research on the Seepage Salamander.\u00a0 Additionally, Zachary Privette, Ismael Gomez, Indersen Mirchandani, and Adriana Cabrera-Zurita provided service to the Academy by moderating multiple paper sessions at the meeting.\u00a0 Adriana Cabrera-Zurita, Marilu Salazar, Haley Smith, Clayton Lynch and Indersen Mirchandani also presented posters.<\/p>\n
Accompanying the students were NCC Natural Sciences Instructors Dr. Dave Beamer and Marguerite Bishop.\u00a0 Instructor Tammy Glover said, \u201cThese students exemplify what it means to be a NCC Nighthawk and we are very proud of their leadership and scientific endeavors. Much of the hands-on research our students do on NCC\u2019s campus typically is not even available for students until they reach the graduate level. It is quite rewarding as faculty to see students engaged in learning about their area of research interest.\u201d<\/p>\n
The North Carolina Academy of Science (NCAS) is a community of senior scientists, graduate students undergraduate students and faculty advisors from various institutions and organizations, representing inter-disciplinary science scholarship.
