In the photo, North Carolina Forest Service Nash County Ranger Bill Lewis (right) presents the award to Ken White, NCC Master Gardener.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents are eager to volunteer in their communities and become better stewards of the environment,\u201d said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. \u201cParticipating in Tree Campus USA sets a fine example for other colleges and universities, while helping to create a healthier planet for us all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. Nash Community College achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA\u2019s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an ArborDay observance and student service-learning project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe college\u2019s commitment to investing in the community\u2019s future is evident in our support of the environment,\u201d NCC President Dr. Bill Carver said. \u201cAs a campus we strive to be good stewards of the land resources provided to us.\u201d Nash Community College was presented the award Friday, April 7, 2017 at the Arbor Day Celebration held at the Imperial Centre. The college is one of 12 campuses in North Carolina and one of over 250 in the nation to receive this recognition for 2016, which also marks the second year that Nash Community College has earned the national designation.<\/p>\n<p>The Arbor Day Foundation has helped campuses throughout the country plant thousands of trees, and Tree Campus USA colleges and universities invested more than $46.7 million in campus forest management last year.
