STEM Summer Camp at Nash Community College

Nash Community College is hosting two summer science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) camps June 10-14 and June 24-28 for rising 6th-12th grade students. From 9:00 am – 3:30 pm each day, students will conduct laboratory experiments and explore activities related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics directed by NCC Instructor Reggie Cobb and Professor Dina Pitt. Participants will perform many hands-on activities using advanced tools, equipment and technology while learning about fields and careers in science and math.

In the past, Nash Community College has conducted biotechnology and other science
camps. This year’s camps highlight careers in biotechnology, zoology, human and molecular genetics, wildlife biology, statistics, engineering, pharmacy, and nutrition. During the camp, students will participate in animal dissections and bridge building.

Currently, the college provides NCC students the opportunity to conduct biotechnology
research with students and professors at the university level while completing their first
two years of college without leaving the area. The NCC Math and Science Department encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to become educated in the fields of biology, mathematics, and engineering. NCC students can expect to gain experience in research as they transition from the community college to the university. “One of our goals is to spark students’ interests in science and math and to introduce camp participants to the community college setting,” Cobb shared.

Supplies for the laboratory activities were purchased through a grant funded by the Nash
Community College Foundation. The camp fee of $100.00 per participant, assisting with instructional costs and liability insurance, is due at registration. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate of achievement.

Rising 6th-12th grade students interested in attending the camp should register at the NCC Continuing Education office by April 30, 2013. Located on the second floor of the Business & Industry Center, the office’s registration hours are Monday-Thursday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm and Friday 8:00 am-3:30 pm. Space is limited to the first 40 students per week. Please contact Reggie Cobb at rcobb@nashcc.edu or 252-451-8346 for more information.
