NCC to Host Summer Kids Camps
Nash Community College is hosting two summer science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) camps for rising 6th-12th grade students. The first session is June 16-20, 2014 and the second session is June 30-July 3, 2014, from 9:00 am – 3:30 pm daily. Students will participate in laboratory experiments and activities related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Nash Community College has conducted similar STEM camps, biotechnology camps, and other science camps. Both sessions will focus on careers in biotechnology, zoology, human and molecular genetics, wildlife biology, statistics, engineering, pharmacy, and nutrition. Although some content may be similar, each camp will have different activities. During the camps students will participate in many hands-on activities including animal dissections and bridge building.
“Participants in this camp will perform many hands-on laboratory and field activities that allow them to use advanced tools, equipment and technology while learning about different fields and careers in science and math. One of our goals is to spark students’ interests in science/math as well as introduce them to the community college setting,” NCC Instructor Reggie Cobb said.
The college provides students the opportunity to conduct biotechnology research with university level students and professors while completing their first two years of college without leaving the area. The NCC Mathematics and Sciences Department is growing and encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to become educated in the fields of biology, mathematics, and engineering.
The camp costs are $100.00 per participant for session one and $80.00 per participant for session two. Payment is due at the time of registration. Also, several forms must be completed while registering in order for the student to attend. Space is limited to the first 40 participants per session. Since different activities will be conducted during each session, participants may register for one or both camps. Participants are asked to bring their lunch each day. The deadline to register is Friday, June 13, 2014. Registration is in the NCC Continuing Education Department located on the second floor of the Business and Industry Center Monday-Thursday, 8 am-4:30 pm and Friday 8 am-3:30 pm. Space is limited to the first 40 participants per session. Supplies for the lab activities were funded through a grant from the Nash Community College Foundation.
