Leroy (Roy) Jones Memorialized with Newly Established Scholarship

Leroy Jones 2b

Leroy (Roy) Jones

Early twentieth century American philosopher, John Dewey said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” No truer words could be used to describe the life of a man who used the power of education to overcome life’s hurdles, than Leroy Jones. Acquainted with their father’s great passion to help others and his understanding that obstacles in life can be tackled with the right knowledge; Leroy (Roy) Jones’ daughters, Carolyn Parker and Patricia Lowery thought it fitting to establish a scholarship at Nash Community College to memorialize their father’s journey.

Formerly residing in Oak City, NC, Roy was an influential member in his community. A father to four children and a veteran with a life-long desire to learn, he was knowledgeable in many subjects and was looked upon by friends and family for advice. Roy was self-taught in many fields such as carpentry, machining and agriculture. An avid farmer, he took pleasure in tending the crops on his farm. He often distributed produce yielded from his crop to family and neighbors, which they would find as a welcome surprise upon returning home. Roy is described by his daughters, as being an avid reader, detailed record keeper, no-nonsense type with a sense of humor and an all-around “good man”.

The Leroy Jones Scholarship was established to assist students attending Nash Community College, who are residents of Oak City or Martin County, NC. Other criteria required for eligibility are a GPA of 2.5 or higher, High School Senior status and demonstration of financial need, qualities of leadership, good citizenship and community involvement.

On November 4, 2014 at the age of 80, Leroy Jones’ pursuit of knowledge concluded on his farm in Oak City. However, so that others striving for an education may continue with their pursuits, the Leroy Jones Memorial Scholarship has been established; honoring a man and his passion for education.
