NCC Experiences Growth and Expansion

DSC_3475Nash Community College has experienced an unprecedented period of growth and expansion. In 2012, Nash County voters supported a bond referendum, which along with private donors and investments by the U.S. Economic Development Administration resulted in the opening of the Continuing Education and Public Services Building. Renovation was then required in more than 30,000 square feet of vacated student and instructional space.

In March, North Carolina voters passed the Connect NC Bond supporting higher education and many other important projects throughout the state that will enhance the quality of life for all North Carolina citizens. The approval of the bond provides an opportunity for the college to begin offering a new veterinary technology assistant program to further enhance the region’s workforce.

Vet techs are in high demand across the State and nationally, and projections anticipate the same demand beyond 2020. Similar to human health care, veterinary medicine has become more advanced and specialized, resulting in veterinarians seeking more qualified employees capable of performing and assisting with a wide-array of specialized procedures. Local and regional veterinarians have confirmed there is a great demand for vet techs – highly skilled professionals with earning potential between $40,000 and $60,000 annually.

Additionally because of the bond, the campus will expand with an engineering and advanced manufacturing building and the highly successful Nash-Rocky Mount Early College High School will move out of trailers and into a renovated building.

But it is not just buildings that have garnered the attention. Nash Community College became certified as one of only two National Demonstration Sites for AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Higher Education (AHE). A four year partnership with AVID has culminated in a campus of professionals working together to develop and implement a common instructional language. This has allowed the College to establish a framework of continuous classroom improvement resulting in an even greater level of student success.

The college serves over 12,000 citizens each year in curriculum and continuing education programs. The faculty and staff are dedicated to delivering educational opportunities that prepare graduates for productive careers or to transfer to a senior college or university.

President Dr. Bill Carver has said, “Building a better state and a strong middle class economy is the responsibility of community colleges. It is about Blue Love, students first, and declaring the college student ready. The commitment is not reserved for a special department or group of students; everyone is impacted by great instruction. Nash Community College is an “all in” college and that is what Blue Love is about.”
