NCC Provides Training to Displaced Nurses
Nash Community College’s Nurse Aide instructors recently provided a refresher course for 20 nurses from Puerto Rico who, due to the devastation left from Hurricane Maria, are now seeking employment in the United States.
“Nurses working in Puerto Rico are not able to come to the states and go directly to work as nurses due to some differences in the training in Puerto Rico and the United States. Therefore, when these students arrive in the U.S. they have to receive additional training in nursing before taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), the examination for the licensing of nurses in the United States,” NCC Nurse Aide Coordinator/Instructor Rita Joyner said.
Nash Community College was contacted by the North Carolina Health Care Personnel Registry, North Carolina Center for Aide Regulation and Education to administer the training. Following successful completion of the abbreviated Nurse Aide I refresher, and written and skills exams, the students may work as nurse aides.
Upon completion of the refresher course, the students took the state-mandated National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) exam with a pass rate of 95 percent.
“Nash Community College is known for meeting the needs of the community by customizing training. In this case, we are responding swiftly to assist displaced nurses. Our goal is for the students to continue their careers,” Joyner said.
