Local Scout Supports NCC Bee Campus

Nash Community College celebrated National Pollinator Week June 18-24. As a certified affiliate of the Bee Campus USA program, NCC has a Bee Campus USA committee, a Campus Pollinator Habitat Plan featuring locally native, pollinator-friendly plants and a least toxic integrated pest management (IPM) plan.  The campus hosts annual events to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators and annually sponsors and tracks student service projects to enhance pollinator habitats on-and off-campus. NCC biennially offers a pollinator protection course and incorporates pollinator protection topics into curriculum.

Recently, Austin Harrell, 15, dedicated his Eagle Scout project efforts to support NCC’s Bee Campus by planting a bee pollinator garden and constructing a new bee hive for the campus. Harrell donated $957 from his fundraising to Nash Community College for continuation of the project. He is a member of Troop 76 in Nashville, NC where he has served as Chaplain, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and Senior Patrol Leader. During his four years of Scouting, Harrell has earned a total of 46 merit badges.

Austin is the son of Michael and Amy Harrell of Nashville. Outside of Scouting, he enjoys playing trombone in the concert and marching bands at Northern Nash High School; serving in the orchestra and youth group of First Baptist Church; and participating in outdoor activities including hiking, baseball, camping, and tennis.
