NCC Launches Annual Scholarship Campaign

2020 Donor Appreciation Reception

The Nash Community College Foundation Board of Directors kicked off its scholarship fundraising campaign on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at the annual Donor Appreciation Reception.

Donors heard from student recipients who shared their accounts of personal impact from scholarships. “Thank you for believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself,” NCC student Kanovis Bullock said. “Thank you all for seeing the potential in not just me and my fellow classmates but seeing the potential in the City of Rocky Mount, the potential in Nash and Edgecombe counties, and the potential in Nash Community College.”

The community campaign, which runs until June 30, supports deserving students seeking help with their educational expenses and assists with the instructional needs of the college.

Bullock, a first-generation college student, has already completed his Certified Nursing Assistant training and plans to pursue a local career as a registered nurse. “Looking back on my life as a troubled kid from West End Terrence Projects, I was looked upon as a person who probably wasn’t going to live to see the age of 21,” Bullock said.

Each year, local individuals and organizations choose to support Nash Community College by contributing to the campaign. “In addition to scholarships, we also offer a campus small-grant program to faculty and staff who wish to implement programs or projects on campus, and the traditional source of funds simply aren’t there,” NCC Vice President of Institutional Advancement Pam Ballew said. “We are able to offer these small grants through the unrestricted gifts made to the Foundation and through endowments set up specifically for college programming and equipment. Indeed, an investment in Nash Community College is an investment in the community.”

“My new journey started at Nash Community College. Since I have been here, I have made the Dean’s List and I have earned several scholarships,” Bullock said. “Where am I going with all of this? Somebody believed that my life was more valuable than the way I was treating it. I pray that one day I will be sitting where you all are hearing someone tell their story about how I became part of their journey.”

The Nash Community College Foundation, Inc. was established in 1983 to increase community awareness, raise funds for the student scholarship program, and to help meet the needs of Nash Community College. Hundreds of scholarship applications are received each year as the cost of education continues to rise.
