The Mercer Foundation, Inc. Scholarship established at NCC

The Nash Community College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of The Mercer Foundation, Inc. Scholarship to honor students enrolled in first responder programs at Nash Community College.

Established in 2021 by Lt. Col. (Ret.) James Mercer, and his wife, Delois, of Nashville, NC, the annual scholarship will support degree, diploma and certificate students pursuing Emergency Dispatch, Basic Law Enforcement Training, Fire Services, EMS and Emergency Management and other first responder programs.

Joseph Kirby, an EMT-Paramedic student from Raleigh, has been awarded the scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The Mercer Foundation, Inc. was founded in late 2017 by the Mercers to create healthy opportunities for children and to equip disabled veterans with the necessary tools, education and vocational training and provide balanced meals for children in high-risk environments. Knowing well the challenges that face his community, Mr. Mercer has first-hand experience in transitioning back into the workforce after serving in the military.

The Mercer Foundation, Inc.’s interest in supporting future first responders stems from Mr. Mercer’s career in the US Military, law enforcement, fire and emergency services.

A criminal justice degree alumnus of NCC, Mr. Mercer was named NCC’s Outstanding Alumnus in 2003. James Mercer has also served on the NCC Board of Trustees since 2014.
