Rocky Mount Fire Chief to Address NCC Graduates

Nash Community College has announced Rocky Mount Fire Department (RMFD) Chief Corey Mercer will be the keynote speaker for the college’s 2022 spring commencement exercises.

The events will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, on the college campus. This year, Adult High School, High School Equivalency and Curriculum graduates will have the opportunity to participate in either a drive-through ceremony in the morning or an in-person ceremony held in the evening in Brown Auditorium.

Chief Mercer began his career in the fire service with RMFD in 1994. He worked his way through the ranks as firefighter, fire engineer, fire captain, and battalion chief before taking the role of fire chief in Elizabeth City. After one year there, he had the opportunity to return to Rocky Mount in 2019 to lead the internationally accredited RMFD as chief. Under his direction, the department has maintained its international accreditation status and obtained a public protection Class 1 rating.

Chief Mercer is an Army veteran and graduate of Wilson Community College where he earned an associate degree in fire protection technology. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Mount Olive College and a Master of Science in administration from Central Michigan University. A graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program, Mercer is also a member of several other organizations including the International Association of Fire Chiefs, North Carolina Fire Chief’s Association, North Carolina Accreditation Support Consortium, Center for Public Safety Excellence where he serves as a Level 1 peer assessor and North Carolina State Firefighter’s Association. Mercer has six children and one grandson.

Nash Community College’s Associate Degree Nursing graduate pinning ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 12 at 6:00 pm in the auditorium. Program graduates will be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam.
