NCC Selects Herring Achievement Award Nominee

Sofia Lugo Flores

Nash Community College has selected Sofia Lugo Flores as its nominee for the Dr. Dallas Herring Achievement Award.

The Dr. Dallas Herring Achievement Award was established in 2010 by the NC Association of Community College Presidents to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, who is considered one of the founding fathers of community colleges in North Carolina. The award is presented annually to a current or former student who best embodies Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.”

Sofia Lugo Flores has not only overcome substantial obstacles over the years in pursuit of education, but one who has also impressed classmates and instructors alike with the quality and passion of her work. Over the past 16 years, she has been building on her education at Nash, earning a GED diploma, a Medical Office Administration degree, and is now pursuing an Associate in Arts degree. Upon graduation, she plans to transfer to NC Wesleyan University or East Carolina University.

Her nominating instructor said, “Sofia has impressed all of her instructors and classmates with her dedication and preparation for all class assignments, discussion, and activities. Despite all of the demands on her time, she always makes an effort to access the resources she needs in order to be successful at Nash, and has often expressed her desire to make sure everything she does for her classes is of the highest quality.” Lugo Flores is a mother of three and also balances full-time employment while attending college classes.

Sofia Lugo Flores’ efforts were recently recognized when she was selected as NCC’s Humanities and Social Sciences Standout Student. She will represent NCC as the 2023 nominee for the NC Community College System’s Dr. Dallas Herring Achievement Award.
