Solorzano Receives 2017 NCC Ambassador Award

​Each year, the Nash Community College Ambassador Award is given to a full-time employee or group of employees who provide outstanding representation of the College in the community. The 2017 recipient is Aida Solorzano, NCC English as a Second Language (ESL) Coordinator and Spanish Instructor.

Since joining the staff in 2005, Solorzano has made a significant mark on the campus and in the community as an advocate for the College’s ESL program serving adults with limited and non-English proficiency. She is known for her work to establish collaborative agency partnerships. Solorzano is passionate about providing students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity for a developmental education and communicative skills by addressing their multicultural and multilingual learning needs.

Aida Solorzano earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Costa Rica. In her role, she is responsible for the overall planning, development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of the ESL and foreign language courses. Her contributions guide the program in promoting the development of basic skills in listening, speaking, writing, reading and comprehending the English language, as well as strategies for successful assimilation. Most recently, she spearheaded a community initiative to raise funds to assist under-served residents in a remote village in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria.

Solorzano’s experience has helped the College expand ESL offerings, assess community needs, and address opportunities to serve the growing local multicultural community.
