NCC Student’s Passion for Video Games Leads to Degree

Casi Brown’s passion for video games began at an early age. That passion was all the motivation needed to put her on a mission to one day attend a college or university in pursuit of a gaming degree. Like any good video game though, she’s gone through a few levels to reach her ultimate goal.

In October 2016, Brown, of Rocky Mount, enrolled in the High School Equivalency Bootcamp course offered through the Nash Community College Continuing Education Department to work towards obtaining a High School Equivalency Diploma. “The faculty and staff greeted me with open arms and instilled the desire to push forward in my academic studies,” Brown said. “Whenever I needed help or guidance, they, my mentors, were always there to assist me.”

Brown graduated with honors from the High School Equivalency Bootcamp course and in January 2017 enrolled in the Information Technology: Game and Simulation program of study at NCC. As she leveled up, she noted, “The transition to full-time college student was excellent.” While there was a bit of anxiety attending college for the first time, she quickly adjusted after attending a few classes and from the encouragement from NCC faculty and staff. “I knew I was in good hands,” she continued.

In May 2020, Brown earned an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Information Technology: Game and Simulation Programming with a 3.910 cumulative grade point average.

Her next transition will be in the fall as she attends William Peace University to continue her studies in pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in Simulation and Game Design. “I am ecstatic to continue my studies at WPU to obtain my Bachelor’s Degree,” she said. Ultimately Brown wants to work for a gaming company.

She is a strong advocate for Nash Community College. “My message for current or future NCC students is to never give up on your goals. Be positive when school studies or life get challenging. Move forward through the trials and tribulations with dignity, and work hard on your studies. Most of all do the best that you can do, because I, like many others, believe in you,” she shared.

“I will always be grateful for the support, wisdom, knowledge, and Blue Love spirit shown from the faculty, staff, and administration while attending NCC,” Brown concluded.
