NCC SkillsUSA Students and Chapter Awarded at State Conference

Nash Community College students earned numerous awards during competitions at the SkillsUSA North Carolina State Leadership Conference held virtually in April 2021.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to promote workforce preparation. Chartered in 2017, the NCC SkillsUSA chapter helps students excel by providing educational programs, leadership opportunities, events and competitions that support career and technical education.
The following NCC students were recognized at the 2021 conference.
• Dan Battle, Cosmetology student, won gold in the Barbering competition.
• Aseal Fakhri Yousef, Cosmetology student, won gold in the Nailcare Post-Secondary competition.
• Caleb Garcia, Computer Engineering Technology student, won gold in the Computer Programming competition.
• Bo Wade, Computer Engineering Technology student, won gold in the Technical Computer Applications competition.
• Cameron Rogerson, Electronics Engineering Technology student, won gold in the Electronics Technology competition.
• Christopher Blanchard, Electronics Engineering Technology student, won silver in the Electronics Technology competition.
• Bria Baker-Robinson, Cosmetology student, won silver in the Nailcare Post-Secondary competition.
• Felicity Layton, Cosmetology student, won bronze in the Cosmetology Post-Secondary competition.

Additionally, the College received the Total Participation Award and Gold Chapter of Distinction Award recognizing achievement related to the integration of the SkillsUSA Framework in chapter program of work activities.

As a Total Participation Program, the College determines which curriculum programs join the chapter allowing students to enjoy the benefits of the club without having to burden the students with the cost of membership. Having met all prior distinction levels, the chapter was awarded the Gold Chapter of Distinction by SkillsUSA for the fourth consecutive year.

One of the most important aspects of the program is to promote the development of soft skills in the classroom through the use of the SkillsUSA Framework addressing personal, workplace, and technical skills grounded in academics.
