Dual Enrollment Cosmetology Students Awarded at Regional Skills Competition

Nash Community College Cosmetology students won first, second, third, and fifth place at the SkillsUSA South Central Regional Rally held at Fayetteville Technical Community College on Friday, March 10, 2023. Congratulations to Robin Brown, Nash Central High School (First Place); Destiny Harrison, Northern Nash Senior High School (Second Place); Armoni Pittman, Rocky Mount High School (Third Place); and Jasmine Webb, Nash Central High School (Fifth Place).

These students participated in the Cosmetology Beginner competition as high school students dually enrolled in Cosmetology courses at NCC. Through the Career and College Promise program, eligible students can earn employment credentials or college degree credits while in high school. The program is offered tuition-free and includes 23 Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways and four university transfer pathways.

A one-day conference, the Regional Rally gives students competition experience and exposure as they prepare to compete at the North Carolina SkillsUSA State Conference. Students were evaluated on their verbal communication, interviewing skills, hair cutting and design and academic knowledge.

SkillsUSA is a nonprofit partnership of education and industry founded in 1965 as Vocational Industrial Clubs of America to strengthen the country’s skilled workforce. Driven by employer demand, SkillsUSA helps students develop necessary personal and workplace skills along with technical skills grounded in academics.

Phyllis Hawkins, NCC Cosmetology instructor and SkillsUSA advisor took the students to the rally.
