A Vision for the Future Under Dr. Lew Hunnicutt’s Leadership at Nash Community College
As Dr. Lew K. Hunnicutt embarks on his sixth year as President of Nash Community College (NCC), his vision is more than a strategic plan; it’s a transformative journey for the entire community. With a commitment to making NCC the premier choice for education in Nash County, Dr. Hunnicutt is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.
“Nash County is home to around 96,000 residents, and I believe 30,000 to 40,000 of them could greatly benefit from what we offer at NCC,” Dr. Hunnicutt explains. “Our goal is to ensure that we are not just an option but the first choice for individuals seeking to improve their lives and careers.”
In a region rich with industrial opportunities, NCC stands out as the 11th largest employer, uniquely positioned to collaborate with local industries. However, Dr. Hunnicutt recognizes the challenge that comes with this status. “With many organizations offering entry-level jobs that pay $13-15 an hour, we must work harder to demonstrate the long-term benefits of education,” he notes. “By building partnerships with local industries, we can create a mutually beneficial relationship where employers encourage their employees to pursue further education and training.”
This focus on collaboration extends to NCC’s commitment to adult learners. Recent enrollment data highlights a promising 14.5% increase in this demographic for the fall semester. “Supporting adult learners is crucial for the growth of our community,” he emphasizes. “These individuals often juggle work, family and education, and we need to make their path to success as smooth as possible. We want them to know that returning to education is not just an option; it’s a pathway to a better future.”
A significant part of Dr. Hunnicutt’s vision involves improving infrastructure, particularly the urgent need for a new Health Sciences building. “Many institutions are investing in modern learning spaces for health sciences, and it’s essential that we do the same,” he asserts. “This state-of-the-art facility will not only enhance the learning experience for our nursing, physical therapy and medical assistant students but also ensure they are prepared for the evolving expectations of the healthcare industry.”
NCC has already made strides in this area with the new Braswell Veterinary Medical Technology building, thanks to a generous donation from the Braswell Family. This facility includes an open clinic area, recovery room, dental suite, and more, underscoring NCC’s dedication to providing quality education across all its programs. “Every program at NCC matters,” Dr. Hunnicutt states. “We’re committed to enhancing educational opportunities that align with the workforce needs of our region.”
The establishment of a new Health Sciences building will not only benefit health sciences students but will also free up current nursing spaces for the CiTi (Center for Industry, Technology, & Innovation) High School. “Moving CiTi High School onto our campus opens endless possibilities for these students,” Dr. Hunnicutt enthuses. “Their proximity to our programs will enhance their education, and it’s a win for all involved.”
In addition to traditional education, Dr. Hunnicutt is focused on expanding NCC’s continuing education offerings. “We’re taking education to the people,” he explains. “Our team is actively reaching out to everyone, including churches, community centers and public buildings to address needs like digital literacy and support for our expanding Hispanic population.”
Something he hopes to accomplish during his presidency is the development of a workforce development center in downtown Rocky Mount, aimed at providing accessible training opportunities. “This center would bring our services directly to the community, making it easier for individuals to access education without the barriers of distance,” he notes. “It’s about making education available to everyone, right where they are.”
As Dr. Hunnicutt looks to the future, his vision for Nash Community College is clear: “I want NCC to be the go-to institution for education in Nash County, ensuring that every resident has the opportunity to thrive. Together, we can create a community where education is not just a stepping stone, but a launchpad for limitless possibilities.”
With an unwavering commitment to growth, community partnership, and innovation, Dr. Hunnicutt is not just leading NCC; he is shaping the future of education in Nash County.
Stay tuned as we embark on this exciting journey together, fostering education and opportunity for all!
