Math Department Demonstrates Commitment to Student Success

MathFaculty- PresidentsCupThe 2014 President’s Cup was presented to Nash Community College’s Math Tank faculty and staff for their commitment in assisting and supporting math students and helping facilitate student success. The College’s most prestigious award is bestowed annually upon any individual or group who has made an indelible mark on the campus.

Known for consistently leading students to success in Mathematics, Department Chair Dina Pitt said, “Math is a challenging subject for many people, and some see it as an impossible obstacle in their educational journey. Our job as instructors is to guide students through every step, removing barriers and encouraging them along the way. We help them to learn in a way that leads to completion and a promising future.”

Nash Community College introduced the interactive Math Tank in 2011. The innovative learning environment is equipped with computers for student use, faculty work stations, 70” LCD displays for student viewing from all angles of the room, wireless touch screen controllers and a high definition video distribution system. The only one of its kind in the area, the space is designed to facilitate student learning during fundamental studies. “The Math Tank is life changing for many of our students and the data show an increase in student progress that demonstrates our new methods of instruction are working,” Pitt said. “If we can prepare students early on, then their chances of persisting through their studies increase, leading to a more prepared workforce and successful college transfer.”
